Hypnosis
What is Hypnosis?
The definition of hypnosis that I prefer is that it is a state of mind in which you have a fixed focus of attention.
What does that mean?
That means that in this state of mind you can completely concentrate on a particular idea or thought process, without distraction - in a similar way to some forms of meditation,
this can be (but not necessarily) accompanied by a feeling of relaxation & a dreamlike state in which you can use your imagination very vividly.
Hypnotherapy
In hypnotherapy this state of mind can be produced with the help of your hypnotherapist, guiding you into this state of mind or trance, where they can make suggestions & help you to solve problems, which you have perhaps been unable to overcome on your own.
You can also learn simple techniques for self hypnosis, which can be useful for relaxation, problem solving or heightened awareness.
In a trance you are not asleep or under anyone's control, if anything you are more aware & conscious than at other times, as you are not distracted by self talk or worry.
You can always 'come out' of a trance easily, as really all you are doing is changing your state of mind & concentration, not being asleep or unconscious.
What can hypnosis help with?
Most people associate hypnotherapy with things like stopping smoking, weight loss or stress reduction, however it can be used in psychotherapy to help overcome all sorts of psychological issues including curing phobias and fears, increasing confidence, stopping ocd, getting through depression, as well as pain control & countless other issues.
It is important to remember that hypnosis is a useful tool in therapy, but Not the therapy itself.
